Group Spiritual Direction for the BeFriender Ministry Community

What is Group Spiritual Direction?

About Group Spiritual Direction

Group Spiritual Direction involves

  • A small group meeting regularly.
  • A spiritual director guiding the process.
  • Sacred listening, where each participant is given time to share their experiences or questions while others listen deeply and prayerfully.
  • Silence and reflection, honoring the presence of the Spirit.
  • Discernment, where the group helps the individual notice where God might be moving in their life.
  • Praying together.

Core Elements

  • Intentionality – The group meets with a shared spiritual intention.
  • Confidentiality – What’s shared in the group stays in the group.
  • Sacred Listening – No fixing, correcting, or offering advice. Instead, members listen deeply and may ask gentle, open-ended questions.
  • Silence – Silence is a core part of the rhythm, creating space for Spirit to move.
  • Equality – Everyone has a voice; no one is the expert on another’s spiritual journey.

Benefits of Group Spiritual Direction

  • A safe and sacred space to reflect on your spiritual journey.
  • Encouragement in times of doubt, change, or challenge
  • Help in discerning life decisions or spiritual movements.
  • A sense of belonging and companionship
  • Deepening of one’s prayer life and attentiveness to God

Group spiritual direction is for anyone who

  • Is seeking spiritual growth and reflection.
  • Desires companionship and support on their journey of faith
  • Feels called to listen to God’s movement in everyday life.
  • Can commit to regular, respectful, and honest presence with others.

Chaplain John

“The BeFriender teams on our campuses have been invaluable in doing phone ministry with fellow residents during this time of social isolation. Some campuses have divided their total population among the BeFrienders so that everyone gets an occasional call!”
